DECLARATION OF LOCAL DISASTER EMERGENCY
On Saturday, March 14, Boulder County made a declaration of “local disaster emergency,” This is a process, under the state statutes, where after the Governor declares an emergency affected towns, cities and counties may make a similar declaration in order to be eligible for coordinated assistance during an emergency. The current Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic certainly qualifies.
Today, March 16, 2020, after consultation with the Town Board, I have declared a state of Local Disaster Emergency for the Town of Jamestown.
This declaration is necessary to ensure that Jamestown has access to the additional resources our residents and government will need in the coming weeks. The economic package being addressed in Congress also includes provisions for financial compensation for small businesses who are affected by the pandemic.
My “executive declaration” can only last for seven days. The Town Board will meet on Thursday, March 19th in order to extend the declaration.
For the Town Government it will not be “business as usual”. There will be restrictions and prohibitions about the use of Town facilities. We are looking for ways to run the town and meet without unnecessary risk to employees, volunteers and elected officials.
It will get worse before it can become better. It is incumbent upon each of us to do everything we can to limit the spread and impact of COVID-19 and to help those residents who need assistance. If you think you are overreacting to the crisis- you probably aren’t.
